Cereal Bars Display - high res

The global cereal bars market has grown substantially over the past few years, and is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate of 3.9% between 2017 and 2022.  South African consumers, who lead increasingly busy lifestyles, are, more and more, turning to convenient ‘on-the-go’ meals and snacks – and there is every reason to believe that the market here will grow at least in line with global rates.

Cereal bars are consumed, mainly, as snacks between meals and as a sit-down-breakfast substitute – and as people of all ages move from the traditional ‘3 meals a day’ to more of a grazing lifestyle, the need for snacks which are perceived as healthier than, say, chocolate, will continue to increase.  Cereal bars are convenient and, importantly, quick to eat on the move, which will continue to drive demand amongst all age groups.

Healthier

Another global trend which is increasingly relevant in South Africa is the trend towards eating healthier foods. Cereal bars are considered by many to be a healthy alternative to other snacks, as they can have a high protein and fibre content, as well as vitamins and minerals.

While they are great as snacks for just about everyone, cereal bars can also be particularly attractive to sportsmen, for whom they have many benefits, for example:

  • They are small and light, so can easily be carried in a pocket without hampering performance.
  • Bars with starch and fibre as the main ingredients are digested slowly, providing more energy for longer – a particularly excellent benefit for athletes!
  • They can prevent hypoglycaemia (low blood sugar) after training.
  • They store energy in muscles in the form of glycogen; this provides energy before, during, and after a workout.

Ingredients And Flavours

Cereal bar ingredients can vary widely from bar to bar, and include oats, nuts, dried fruits, flour, honey, sugar, corn, wheat, and puffed rice, amongst others.  And the flavour range is vast: banana, peanut butter, chocolate, honey, strawberry, caramel, yoghurt, raspberry, apple – and various combinations of these and many others – mean not only that they taste delicious, but that there’s a flavour to suit every snack attack!
